Everyone gets two sets of teeth.
The first set is called ‘Milk Teeth’ and the second set is called ‘Adult Teeth’.
Milk Teeth
Children have 20 milk teeth which generally begin to fall out between the ages of 6 and 7 years. These are then replaced with adult teeth.
Adult Teeth
There are 32 adult teeth in total. A full set of adult teeth consists of; 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars and 12 molars. The last four of the adult teeth to appear are the 4 wisdom teeth.
About Teeth
Incisors are the teeth at the front of the mouth. They are flat and help to cut into the food as you bite it. Canine teeth are ‘fang-like’ teeth at the front of the mouth. They help when we are eating tough foods like meat.
Premolars and Molars are the teeth at the sides and back of the mouth. They grind food to make it easier to swallow. Wisdom Teeth generally appear between the ages of 17 and 24. For some people Wisdom teeth may stay under the gum and not appear at all. In some cases, they may need to be extracted if they affect other teeth – often referred to as “coming in sideways” or “impacted wisdom teeth”. |
